Generalised hydrogeological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 500 000 - Conditions for exploitation in groundwater-bearing rocks
(HUEK500EBGG)
The map shows the exploitation conditions in the groundwater-bearing strata at a scale of 1 : 500 000 (Groundwater Exploitation map). \r\n
The exploitation conditions (exploitation potentials) are estimated in order to assess the aquifer. This refers to the well yield or the economical operation of groundwater exploitation, whereby sufficient groundwater availability is assumed. \r\n
Unfavourable exploitation conditions prevail in less thick or less permeable aquifers, and more favourable conditions where the aquifer is thicker or more permeable. The unit used in sediments is the transmissibility (product of coefficient of permeability and thickness). The visualisation options only allow the overall transmissibility to be taken into shown, even if there are two or more separate aquifers. Insufficient transmissibility data gained from hydraulic investigations are available to allow a broad conclusion; the appraisal is therefore based on stratigraphic logs taken from numerous exposures and wells. Standard coefficients of permeability (kf values), determined by analysing a large number of pump tests, are adopted for the primary petrographic constituents. Well yields are used to facilitate comparative estimates of groundwater reserves in consolidated rock. \r\n
Lower Saxony's rocks are divided into three classes, characterising the favourability of the conditions for groundwater exploitation; a fourth class is used for highly variable conditions: \r\n
- Very good exploitation conditions: \r\n
Prevail where very thick, permeable strata are present. Such conditions prevail in Lower Saxony in the Lüneburg and Aurich regions, where Quaternary and Tertiary, predominantly sandy aquifers form a thick, permeable complex. It is overdeepened in the Quaternary channel systems and filled with coarse sedimentary material. In these regions, very high volumes of groundwater can be produced over long periods with a relatively small drawdown, because sufficient resupply by groundwater recharge is ensured. The very good exploitation conditions correspond to transmissibilities of greater than 100 m²/h (corresponding to more than 40 m of coarse sand, for example). \r\n
- Good exploitation conditions: \r\n
Good exploitation conditions prevail at transmissibilities between 20 and 100 m²/h. The aquifer is suitable for abstracting large quantities of groundwater, assuming sufficient groundwater availability. These conditions are prevalent across the entire Quaternary glaciofluvial sediment distribution range in northern Germany, including the alluvial gravel fill along the larger rivers. \r\n
- Unfavourable exploitation conditions: \r\n
Where transmissibilities are lower than 20 m²/h - corresponding to less than 50 m of fine sand, for example - the exploitation conditions are unfavourable. These regions are generally unsuitable for well sites with large groundwater exploitation volumes.
- Highly variable exploitation conditions: \r\n
These conditions are prevalent in regions which do not display uniform exploitation characteristics.
