The map „Potentially suitable locations for horizontal heat exchangers (installation depth of 1.2 - 1.5 m)” differentiates the four categories: \r\
• well suitable, \r\
• suitable, \r\
• less suitable, \r\
• unsuitable (hard rock). \r\
The evaluation is based on data of soil maps, the descriptions of the respective soil profiles, information about the groundwater table, and a rating of soil types and hard rocks. \r
Horizontal heat exchangers use the energy from insolation and atmospheric input (precipitation) stored in the underground. They are usually installed at a depth of 1.2-1.5 m, which is below the area that is affected by freezing during winter. The energy efficiency is higher in moist, water-storing, densely bedded, sandy soils compared to dry, loosely bedded soils. The construction of a horizontal heat exchanger in the required depth at a location with little weathered hard rock can be difficult or rather uneconomic. Horizontal heat exchangers can be used for heating as well as cooling of various buildings. , \r
The data allow an initial estimation of the potentially suitability of a location for horizontal heat exchangers. It cannot replace the detailed investigation of the local conditions. Further information about the legal and technical fundamentals can be found in the “Guideline for geothermal heat utilization in Lower Saxony” (Leitfaden Erdwärmenutzung in Niedersachsen, GeoBerichte 24) and the report about planning criteria for the use of horizontal heat exchangers (Erstellung von Planungsgrundlagen für die Nutzung von Erdwärmekollektoren, GeoBerichte 5). \r
