Generalised hydrogeological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 500 000 - Groundwater bodies for EU-WFR

The map shows the groundwater bodies in Lower Saxony at a scale of 1 : 500 000.\r\n
The groundwater bodies were delineated based on hydraulic boundaries and hydrogeological criteria. The adopted hydraulic boundaries are the surface water divides representing the upgradient boundary and the relevant watercourses as the downgradient boundary. It was assumed that the watersheds of the surface water bodies also generally reflect the subterranean watersheds. However, they may deviate as a result of the hydrogeological conditions. Water bodies were not vertically delineated, because further division was not regarded as useful or necessary for the purpose due to the complex geological structure. \r\n
In a second step, these hydraulically delineated groundwater bodies were divided according to the predominant hydrogeological units into sediments, Mesozoic rock and Palaeozoic rock. Minor deviations between surface and subsurface catchment areas may occur at the watersheds. \r\n
The hydrogeological conditions can be taken from the description of the hydrogeological subareas (see explanation of areas and subareas) from which the groundwater bodies are assembled.
