Generalised soil class map for earthworks to DIN 18 300, 1 : 50 000 - Highest soil class from 0 to 2m   (IBOKLA50)

For planning, cost estimation, and invoicing of earthworks, the exposed sediments and rocks are divided into soil classes according to the General Technical Terms of Contract for Building Works (Allgemeinen Technischen Vertragsbedingungen für Bauleistungen - ATV) in the Construction Tendering and Contract Regulations (Vergabe- und Vertragsordnung für Bauleistungen - VOB). The soil classes included in this DIN standard apply for earthworks and rock works in accordance with ATV DIN 18300.

Soil class 1: topsoil

Soil class 2: flowing soil types

Soil class 3: easily rippable soil types

Soil class 4: moderately rippable soil types

Soil class 5: soil types rippable with difficulty

Soil class 6: easily rippable rock and similar soil types

Soil class 7: rock rippable with difficulty

For draft planning purposes LBEG can produce soil class maps for the whole of Lower Saxony for earthworks to DIN 18300 at a scale of 1 : 50 000 and to a depth of 2 m (below grade - BG), derived from the 1 : 50 000 generalised soil map of Lower Saxony (BÜK50). The units shown in the BÜK50 are based on soil profiles typical for that area.

The soil types they contain were allocated to the corresponding soil groups given in DIN 18196, Soil classification for civil engineering purposes. The soil groups and consolidated rocks were allocated to the corresponding soil classes in accordance with the ATV DIN 18300 allocation criteria.

The highest respective soil classes are shown for the depth profiles: 0 m to 1 m, and 1 m to 2 m and the predominant soil classes (weighted according to thickness, maximum of 3 classes for equal weighting) in the depth profiles: 0 m to 1 m, 1 m to 2 m and 0 m to 2 m.

The true conditions may deviate from the map view, which is homogenised as a result of the scale. For example, local, thin layers of boulders are known – in the Elbe, Leine and Weser river flood plain sediments (soil classes 2 and 4) – which are otherwise allocated to soil classes 5 or 6.

The 'Generalised soil class map for earthworks to DIN 18 300, 1 : 50 000' cannot substitute for a geotechnical investigation to EN 1997 2:2010-10 with supplementary regulations to DIN 4020:2010-12 and national annex EN 1997 2/NA:2010 12.
