Geotopes in Lower Saxony
(GEOTOPE)
'Geotopes are geological formations in inanimate nature that provide information on the development of the Earth and life. They comprise exposures in rocks and soils, minerals and fossils, as well as individual natural features and landscapes.'
'Geotopes characterised by their special geological relevance, rarity, uniqueness or beauty are of conservation value. They are documents of particular importance to science, research and academia, as well as natural and local heritage studies. They may require legal protection, especially if endangered and comparable geotopes are not available to compensate for their loss.'
'Geotope protection is the nature conservation field concerned with maintaining and managing geotopes of conservation value. The scientific tasks of recording and evaluating geotopes, and underpinning proposals for protection, management and maintenance measures for geotopes of conservation value are performed by the state geological surveys. The executive is represented by the responsible nature conservation agencies.'

The german state geological surveys agreed to use a harmonised procedure. The results and definitions are published in the Guidelines for Geotopes in Germany (Arbeitsanleitung Geotopschutz in Deutschland). In Lower Saxony the State Authority of Mining, Energy and Geology compiles the list of geotopes with conservation value and advises the nature conservation agencies in questions involving geotope protection. The aim of these efforts is the long-term protection of the most important witnesses of geological history in Lower Saxony.
