Coastal geological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 25 000 - Relief of the Holocene base
(GHBK25)
From a geological perspective, the modern coastal region with its landscape elements, islands, wadden and marshes, is a very young formation, created during the last 8500 years under the influence of an approximately 25 m rise in sea level. The original Geest landscape, formed during the last glacial, was flooded, partially reworked and covered by coastal Holocene deposits of varying thickness. These are predominantly clayey-silty, in part also sandy wadden and brackish water sediments, transported to the coastal zone by the sea and rivers, or peats accumulated in the coastal moors. This body of sediment, 35 m thick at its maximum, is overlain by dunes reaching heights of up to 25 m in some places on the islands. The 1 : 25 000 coastal geological map of Lower Saxony shows the Holocene landscape forms and coastal deposits in two maps covering the following topics:
- relief of the base of the Holocene;
- coastal Holocene profile types.
The relief of the Holocene base is modelled using a contour map of the depth relative to the German datum (NN), where the individual contours represent 1 m depth intervals, but a colour fill designates depth ranges of 2 m respectively. Map sections where no conclusions on the relief of the base of the Holocene can be drawn are marked by a light blue colouring. Where a map sheet includes Geest areas, they are represented by a lack of colour fill. In many coastal areas the surface of the base of the Holocene corresponds to the former land surface, formed during the ice age. However, in places this original relief has been modified by the marine Holocene flooding and associated erosion processes. Exposed parts of the original Geest landscape were eroded under the impact of the tides and breakers, former valley systems expanded by tidal currents, deepened and in places remodelled into erosion channels reaching far inland. As sea level rise continued, the original landscape forms and the reworked Holocene regions were equally covered by young coastal deposits. These factors mean that the surface of the Holocene base forms a geotechnically important interface between load-bearing, glacial moraine, meltwater and fluvial deposits at the base, and settlement-prone, soft and loose overlying Holocene deposits.
