Engineering geological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 50 000 - Ground conditions   (IGK50)

The 1 : 50 000 engineering geological map (IGK50) is derived from the 1: 50 000 geological map and shows the spatial distribution of the various ground types at a depth of 2 m. Deeper strata cannot always be derived from the IGK50. The LBEG borehole database or the geoarchive can provide additional data. Relationships between the properties, composition and formation of the geological units, and the bearing capacity and risks in the subsurface as a civil engineering medium are established with the aid of certain criteria and rules. A variety of different geological units displaying similar geotechnical properties are amalgamated to form a ground type. Because a footing embedment depth of at least 0.8 m is required for a frost-free foundation, shallow strata are of only minor importance in order to transfer structural loads to the subsurface. Peat, which reacts to loading from structures or groundwater drawdown with pronounced settlement, forms particularly unstable ground from a civil engineering perspective. Only thin covers of peat, 0 to 2 m thick, are therefore taken into consideration and shown hatched in the map.

General information for designing foundations and additional safety measures can be derived from the ground types, as well as targeted, project-specific investigations be planned. The soil groups to DIN 18196 are given for the respective ground types.

The IGK50 cannot substitute for a ground investigation to EN 1997-2 (DIN 4020).

In organic/biogenic (ground type 3, e.g. peat), poorly consolidated (ground type 5, e.g. clay containing sea sill, flood plain loams) and cohesionless (ground types 10, 11, 12, e.g. sand, gravel) soils, groundwater levels at the foundation level must generally be anticipated (cellars dispensed with or cellar designed with groundwater-resistant insulation). In cohesive soils (ground types 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, e.g. clay, silt), water logging from precipitation must be anticipated in the excavation work space, which is generally backfilled with higher permeability material. Water should be carried away using suitable drainage systems. The LBEG's 'Geological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 50 000 - Evaluation: Flood risk' (GHG50) or the local water authority can be consulted for additional information relating to the problem of flood risks.

Soluble subsurface rocks present a particular geotechnical risk (Zechstein, Upper Bunter Sandstone, Middle Muschelkalk and Upper Jurassic (Münder Marl) deposits). These rocks are susceptible to subsidence and doline formation. Information on dolines and areas threatened by dolines is held at LBEG and included in the 'Map of geohazards in Lower Saxony, 1 : 25 000 - Doline- and subsidence-prone zones' (IGG25).
