Generalised hydrogeological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 500 000 - Groundwater quality - Sulphate
(HUEK500GWB_SO4)
The generalised hydrogeological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 500 000 - Groundwater quality: Sulphate content, shows the evaluation of a representative sample of sulphate concentrations taken from the LBEG laboratory database. The data collected in the period 1967-2000 were averaged twice. Where groundwater monitoring wells were subject to multiple analyses, the averages of the available analysis results were formed. In addition, the data from all sampling wells in a 2000 m radius were averaged again.
The classes were formed taking the negligibility threshold and the potable water regulations (Trinkwasserverordnung - TVO) limit value of 240 mg/l into consideration and the TVO value of 500 mg/l for a geogenic excess. Increased concentrations which are obviously caused by point-source anthropogenic inputs (e.g. abandoned landfills), are not included in these generalised maps. The sulphate levels are shown in depth stages without reference to the local hydrogeological situation. The data therefore cannot be compared without taking the respective hydrogeological situation into consideration (e.g hydrogeological layering), nor can the data be adopted for detailed investigations.
Very high sulphate concentrations may be caused by geogenic factors:
the highest sulphate concentrations in Lower Saxony can be found associated with coastal salinisation (East Frisian coast and north of the Jade Bight). Very high geogenic sulphate concentrations can also be found in gypsiferous rock regions (Upper Bunter, Middle Muschelkalk, Middle Keuper, Zechstein), where groundwater sulphate concentrations can reach more than 1000 mg/l .
Sulphide oxidation (e.g. pyrite) also leads to high sulphate levels. Concentrations between 100 and 400 mg/l are reached in the northern Hannover region. One reason for this is the oxidation of pyrite minerals in Cretaceous rocks. Increased iron levels and low pH are further consequences of this reaction.
Very low sulphate levels, at considerably less than 10 mg/l, are usually the result of sulphate reduction, where organic material within the rock is often subjected to oxidation processes during this reaction. The groundwater in the Holocene deposits east and south-east of the Jade Bight has been altered to a large degree by sulphate reduction.
