Biostratigraphic information (PaStraInfo)
(PaStraInfo)
Biostratigraphic dating is especially important when dealing with the geology of Lower Saxony (state survey, natural resources exploration, hydrogeology, engineering geology). Microfossils in particular provide very reliable data on the age and depositional environment of rocks.
Biostratigraphic dates based on macro- and, in particular, microfossils, have been available for Lower Saxony since the 1930s. The majority were previously only available in analogue reports. Since 2002 they have been digitised in the PaStraLa (Palaeontology, Stratigraphy, Laboratories) database. Data acquisition from all available analogue reports began in 2009 and was completed by the end of 2012. To make the results available to the general public, the PaStraInfo (Palaeontological-Stratigraphic Information) application was developed in 2010 and access provided to the public via the NIBIS® map server. The documentation of all analogue reports is completed, several thousand dates from wells and exposures in Lower Saxony and the German North Sea are now available for research and use by all interested parties.
The biostratigraphic results are displayed in table format, the original report can be opened and downloaded as a pdf document; in some cases more than one report may be available for the same well. Additionally selecting 'Wells' on the NIBIS® map server creates a link to the Lower Saxony borehole database (Bohrdatenbank Niedersachsen (BDN)) and shows whether the dates originate from pedological, geological, hydrogeological, non-metals or engineering geology boreholes, or from deep wells.
Not all reports/boreholes are cleared for publication; where this is the case, location information only is displayed. PaStraInfo can be queried on whether and under what conditions further information is available.
