Coastal geological map of Lower Saxony, 1 : 25 000 - Coastal Holocene profile types
(GPTK25)
From a geological perspective, the modern coastal region with its landscape elements, islands, wadden and marshes, is a very young formation, created during the last 8500 years under the influence of an approximately 25 m rise in sea level. The original Geest landscape, formed during the last glacial, was flooded, partially reworked and covered by coastal Holocene deposits of varying thickness. These are predominantly clayey-silty, in part also sandy wadden and brackish water sediments, transported to the coastal zone by the sea and rivers, or peats accumulated in the coastal moors. This body of sediment, 35 m thick at its maximum, is overlain by dunes reaching heights of up to 25 m in some places on the islands. The 1 : 25 000 coastal geological map of Lower Saxony shows the Holocene landscape forms and coastal deposits in two maps covering the following topics:
- relief of the base of the Holocene;
- coastal Holocene profile types.
Visualisation of the coastal Holocene profile types gives a generalised view of the lateral distribution and vertical sequence of coastal deposits. The primary and secondary profile types of the hierarchic lithological system (BARCKHAUSEN et al. 1977, STREIF 1979, 1998) are shown in colour, together with the dune areas on the islands. Map sections where no conclusions on coastal Holocene profile types can be drawn are marked by a light blue colour fill. Where a map sheet includes Geest areas, they are represented by a lack of colour fill. A highly schematic geological section illustrates the stratigraphic sequence and spatial relationships between the clastic and organic sequences of the coastal Holocene in profile columns, and shows the 3 primary profile types and 12 secondary profile types. The clastic complex (primary profile type X) and ist secondary profile types are characterised by predominantly sandy to clayey sediments. Thinner peats may occur at the base of the respective Holocene sediment body only, or at ist surface. More or less intense interfingering of clastic sediments with intercalated peats is characteristic for the interfingering complex (primary profile type Y) and ist secondary profile types. In addition to the intercalated peat layers, peats may also occur at the base of the Holocene sediment body or on ist surface. Fen and high moor peats dominate the peat complex (primary profile type Z) and ist secondary profile types. Clastic sediments may occur here as a thin intercalation within the peats or form thinner peat cover or base layers.
